Covered by God's Grace!

COVERED IN GOD'S GRACE
Gen 3:21 Then the LORD God made clothes out of animal skins for the man and his wife. 22 The LORD said, "These people now know the difference between right and wrong, just as we do. But they must not be allowed to eat fruit from the tree that lets them live forever." 23 So the LORD God sent them out of the Garden of Eden, where they would have to work the ground from which the man had been made.
-God provided cover for man, even after they had disobeyed. Naked and ashamed, they had covered themselves with leaves. God showed them that they were covered by his grace. The skin of a sacrifice was their covering. Even as we are covered acc to Psa_132:9, Psa_132:16; Isa_61:10; Rom_13:14; Eph_4:24; Col_3:10).
Various reasons for this action have been suggested:
And clothed them. The commentators are either too practical or too sin-focussed. Yes, there were practical reasons for God to cover Adam and Eve.  But look down at 8. for a prophetic understanding that gives purpose and meaning of this action in a Better Covenant Theology.
1. To show them how their mortal bodies might be defended from cold and other injuries.2. To cover their nakedness for comeliness’ sake; vestimenta honoris (Chaldee Paraphrase).3. To teach them the lawfulness of using the beasts of the field, as for food, so for clothing.4. To give a rule that modest and decent, not costly or sumptuous, apparel should be used.5. That they might know the difference between God’s works and man’s invention—between coats of leather and aprons of leaves; and, 6. To put them in mind of their mortality by their raiment of dead beasts’ skins.
...and from the School of Man's Total Depravity:
  1. "That they might feel their degradation—quia vestes ex ca materia confectae, belluinum quiddam magis saperent, quam lineae vel laneae—and be reminded of their sin" (Calvin). "As the prisoner, looking on his irons, thinketh on his theft, so we, looking on our garments, should think on our sins" (Trapp).
  2. But here is a Grace Perspective...A foreshadowing of the robe of Christ’s righteousness (Delitzsch, Macdonald, Murphy, Wordsworth, Candlish; cf. Psa_132:9, Psa_132:16; Isa_61:10; Rom_13:14; Eph_4:24; Col_3:10).   Bonar recognizes in Jehovah Elohim at the gate of Eden, clothing the first transgressors, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, as the High Priest of our salvation, had a right to the skins of the burnt offerings (Deu_7:8), and who, to prefigure his own work, appropriated them for covering the pardoned pair.
God's Grace covers you, as Christ is the clothing you wear. We are reminded to 'wear Jesus' in this world. Rom 13:12 Night is almost over, and day will soon appear. We must stop behaving as people do in the dark and be ready to live in the light. Rom 13:13 So behave properly, as people do in the day. Don't go to wild parties or get drunk or be vulgar or indecent. Don't quarrel or be jealous.
Rom 13:14 Let the Lord Jesus Christ be as near to you as the clothes you wear. Then you won't try to satisfy your selfish desires.
Isa 61:10 I celebrate and shout because of my LORD God. His saving power and justice are the very clothes I wear. They are more beautiful than the jewelry worn by a bride or a groom.

Psa 132:8 Come to your new home, LORD, you and the sacred chest with all of its power.
Psa 132:9 Let victory be like robes for the priests; let your faithful people celebrate and shout. >>Victory for priests, as they mediate with God
Psa 132:10 David is your chosen one, so don't reject him. 11 You made a solemn promise to David, when you said, "I, the LORD, promise that someone in your family will always be king.
Psa 132:12 If they keep our agreement and follow my teachings, then someone in your family will rule forever." 13 You have gladly chosen Zion as your home, our LORD. 14 You said, "This is my home! I will live here forever. 15 I will bless Zion with food, and even the poor will eat until they are full.
Psa 132:16 Victory will be like robes for the priests, and its faithful people will celebrate and shout. 17 I will give mighty power to the kingdom of David. Each one of my chosen kings will shine like a lamp 18 and wear a sparkling crown. But I will disgrace their enemies."

We too are clothed by our Father as was the Lost Son.
Luk 15:22 But his father said to the servants, "Hurry and bring the best clothes and put them on him. Give him a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet.

[Next, I will explore the Davidic Covenant as it relates to the Covenant of Jesus, Son of David.  We need to dig deeper into Psalm 132!]

Be blessed, students of the Word, sons of the Kingdom!

Beautiful Scars

Our Scars are Beautiful for God
[Aug '16 while sitting w my mentor Jim Willard]
While I meditated on some of the social issues that caused great pain in different cultures in which I have journeyed and shared. Some are known in both Western and African cultures such as polygamy, whether serial or parallel, but some are so unfamiliar that they are labelled as atrocities. One so-called atrocity that is practised among several tribes in east Africa is Female Genital Mutilation. We need to see these practices from a Kingdom perspective.
  1. FGM becoming an issue in developing countries. “The hand that feeds you; commands you.” Poverty creates an environment where young girls are 'more valuable' if they are cut. So to ensure that they can be married off well, with a generous bride price, they are cut and receive the scar of FGM.
  2. Every culture has its rules which limit their relationship with God. Even denominations have distinctives which put walls up and allow admission to those who will conform to their practices.
  3. These are the external transactions that ultimately hinder transformation.
Rom 13:8 Let love be your only debt! If you love others, you have done all that the Law demands.
  4. Galatians 6:12-14 Discovering the Scars of the Cross.
12 Those who want to impress people by means of the flesh are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 Not even those who are circumcised keep the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your circumcision in the flesh. 14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. 16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God. 17 From now on, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen. [Mirror translation] “18 Brothers, may the revelation of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be the rule of your spirit”
    - FGM 'scars' a woman's true identity. The scars of Christ's crucifixion become “our scars” and therefore define our true identity.
  5. All prideful boasting is excluded by the cross of Christ, because identification with Christ in his death on the cross results in the death of all reasons for such boasting: May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. The world is characterized by prideful boasting about national identity, social status and religious practices.
    > When I live in the world, my life will inevitably be characterized by such boasting. But when I die, the way of the world will no longer govern my life. My belief in the cross of Christ includes not only the realization that he died for me to rescue me from judgment under the law of God, but also the constant awareness that I must reckon myself to have died with him. My participation in Christ's death means that I no longer have any reason for boasting in myself, since the old self characterized by the values of the world is dead. This absolute renunciation of all prideful boasting because of total identification with the crucified Messiah is the aspiration of every true believer. In dying with Christ I live in the Father's love. [IVP NT Commentary]
    - Boasting in the cross affirms our transformed scars.
  6. But 'sins mission is to murder you' [James 1:15]. But scars are reminders of what could have killed you, except for the power of the Cross and Empty Tomb.
  7. Now let us discover the value of Christ's Scars. The wounds of His time spent on earth, that is, His Incarnation. But at His resurrection, Mary did not see the scars, she saw a gardener.
    a) His back – 'by His stripes we are healed'
    b) His head – the thorns became his throne; it was a crown of suffering that brought our hope.
    c) His Hands – by His hand he extended the Grace of the Father
    d) His feet – He came from heaven to earth. He walked where I walk; and our feet become sore.
    e) His Side – Pierced side (Ps. 22:16-18)
  8. Psa 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. [a prophetic description of the Crucifixion].
Psa 22:17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. Psa 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. >>Pierced means to bore thru with an awl. But the word originally describes the 'violence of a lion'. Will we allow our flesh to be penetrated in such a way...for that is the way we will become attached to our cross? Will we allow the lion to do violence to the works of our hands and the ways of our feet?
[CEV] Ps 22:16 Brutal enemies attack me like a pack of dogs, tearing at my hands and my feet. Ps 22:17 I can count all my bones, and my enemies just stare and sneer at me. 18 They took my clothes and gambled for them.
As they did violence to the Incarnate Christ so the world, with its religous systems will do to those who have taken their cross... and we will receive the scars of this world on our head (with our renewed mind), our hands which only do what our Father tells us; our feet which only go where we are told to go, not walking in the ways of this world.
  1. But God also reveals the Hope that is found in those scars. Zec_12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, [cf Jn 19:37] and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. >> Here the action of piercing 'means to thrust through with spear, javelin, sword, or any such weapon.'
  2. All of those scars were formed when Christ was Naked and Vulnerable on the Cross. If we are 'in Christ' we also have access to the Hope of His scars. Ah but are we willing to be vulnerable? Are we willing to lay down our own flesh to expose our nakedness?
  3. We must understand the Nature of Grace as it is revealed thru the Cross. Power may have Passion and Purpose but that is not the fuel to see miracles or healing. Power is activated by Faith through Discernment of what God's Will is in that situation. We release the dynamic of the heavenly realm into a situation or infirmity or lack. What is not there God restores. The power that is released comes only because we walk in our authority as children of God.
  4. [BBE]Joh 1:12 To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right [authority] of becoming children of God--that is, to those who had faith in his name: [“God sanctions the legitimacy of their sonship”i]
[KJV] Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
  5. >> the Authority here is ἐξουσία exousia From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: - authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.
    >> literally “out of the I AM”; Our authority comes out of who God is in us.

Word Study: From Above; Through Him;

Finding Wisdom 'From Above'; [personal study, 07/07/16]
In the midst of worldly wisdom how do we access the wisdom from above? The phrase 'from above' needs to be understood. The Bible uses the Greek Term [ἄνωθεν anōthen] 14 times and it can mean: 1) above, 6
Joh_3:31 (2), Joh_19:11, Jam_1:17, Jam_3:15, Jam_3:17 OR 2) again, 3 Joh_3:3, Joh_3:7, Gal_4:9
Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
>> One must be born 'anew' or 'from above' to access the wisdom 'from above'
Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
>> this 'wisdom from above' is only accessible to those born 'from above.
Joh 3:31 He that comes from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaks: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
>> only those who are 'from above' can speak with the authority 'from above'
But what about the 'wisdom of the world'?
Jas 3:15 This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
This wisdom descends not from above - God is not the author of it, because it is bitter - not meek.
Is earthly – ἐπίγειος ep-ig'-i-os. From G1909 and G1093; worldly (physically or morally): - earthly, in earth, terrestrial. Having this life only in view.
Sensual - Ψυχικη· Animal - having for its object the gratification of the passions and animal instincts. [literally, 'of the human soul']
Devilish - Δαιμονιωδης· Demonic - inspired by demons, and maintained in the soul by their indwelling influence.
Now having accessed the wisdom from above why would we turn back to the wisdom of the world?
Gal 4:8 Howbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods: 9 but now that ye have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how turn ye back again to the weak and beggarly rudiments, whereby ye desire to be in bondage over again?
[CEV] Gal 4:8 Before you knew God, you were slaves of gods that are not real.
Gal 4:9 But now you know God, or better still, God knows you. How can you turn back and become the slaves of those weak and pitiful powers?

Part 2 – Wisdom 'Through Him”
In Part 1 we discovered that Wisdom 'comes from Above in this part we need to understand that it must also come 'Through Christ”. Consider the following scriptures.
Joh_1:7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
Joh_3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Rom_5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom_8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
Rom_11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.
Eph_2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
1Jn_4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
To summarize, through Christ we have 1) Belief 2) Salvation 3) Access to the Father 4)Life

Part 2 Sonship -Being the Elder Son

REMEMBERING SONSHIP  [Kariobangi 10/7/16]
[I preached this message at a small church in east Nairobi; I begin with my favourite quote from the Celtic theologian Erasmus]

Christ has become our memory because suffer from the “soul’s forgetfulness”. Christ has caused us to Remember who we are. Christ comes to Reawaken us to our true nature. He is our Epiphany. He comes to show us the Face of God. He comes to Reveal in us our Face, the True Image of the human soul. We must Rediscover our Identity as SONS of the KINGDOM! WE ARE HERE on earth to Reveal the Father's Will. Revelation of these Sons will Release Revival in the Earthly Realm!
The Elder Son
We all understand the joy of receiving the Lost Son home but what of those who are dutiful and dedicated, successful by the world's standards? The Rich and Successful sons also need to find salvation. Luk 19:8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have wrongfully exacted aught of any man, I restore fourfold.
So let us consider the Elder son. Luk 15:25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.
Luk 15:26 And he called to him one of the servants [NOT his father] , and inquired what these things might be. 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. 28 But he was angry, and would not go in: and his father came out, and entreated him. >> The soul anger had been stored up for all the years his brother had been lost. In those years he had been the son who based his life on POSTION, PERFORMANCE, AND PERSONALITY.
We must rediscover our identity as SONS of the KINGDOM! WE ARE HERE on earth to Reveal the Father's Will.
>>He was angry - This refers to the indignation of the scribes and Pharisees, mentioned Luk_15:1, Luk_15:2. In every point of view, the anger of the older son was improper and unreasonable.
>> the anger of the Elder brother describes the anger of the Pharisees to Jesus' message of Grace and a Forgiving Father.
>>He had already received his part of the inheritance, see Luk_15:12, and his profligate brother had received no more than what was his just dividend.
The word used for 'anger' is: [Strong's G3710] -ὀργίζω orgizō or-gid'-zo From G3709; 1) to provoke or enrage, that is, (passively) become exasperated: - be angry (wroth). Thayer Definition: 1) to provoke, to arouse to anger
  1. to be provoked to anger, be angry, be wroth. [KJC]
    Other occurrences of 'orgidzo' angry, 5 Mat_5:22, Luk_14:21, Luk_15:28, Eph_4:26, Rev_11:18 wroth, 3 Mat_18:34, Mat_22:7, Rev_12:17
    >> In all these occurences it is either a brother angered [exasperated] or a master. God is never described as 'angry' [orgidzo] with you.
  2. Eph 4:26 Be angry [orgidzo] without sinning. Don't go to bed angry. >>This is a 'soul anger' that is too common in our interactions.
  3. Passive anger can be just as destructive to the soul. It is like drinking poison ['sumu'] and hoping your enemy is harmed. 'JuJu' [witchcraft] is used to harm others but it poisons our own souls. Even a meal made with anger will poison the soul. [Or sharing a bed]
  4. Bishops must not be 'quickly angered' [orgilos]. Tit 1:7 Because a bishop is a supervisor appointed by God, he must have a good reputation. He must not be a stubborn or irritable person. He must not drink too much or be a violent person. He must not use shameful ways to make money.
  5. Mar 3:5 Jesus was angry as he looked around at them. He was deeply hurt because their minds were closed. Then he told the man, "Hold out your hand." The man held it out, and his hand became normal again. >> Jesus was angry [orge] with a godly anger. This word occurs many times in the NT and refers to the anger of God at the imbalance found in the world system; the injustice created by Legalistic thinking.
  6. Joh 7:23 If you circumcise a male on the day of worship to follow Moses' Teachings, why are you angry [bilious χολάω cholaō] with me because I made a man entirely well on the day of worship?
    - Jesus accused the Pharisees of being enraged based on his Sabbath actions.
    - this is the only occurrence of this word and describes an indignation at 'breaking religious rules'

ANGERED TO ACT
It seems through these examples of 'anger' that there is a righteous anger based on a sense of Kingdom living; and an unrighteous anger based on a Disruption of the religious status quo. What makes you angry? Our 'soul senses' are processing information about our world. Are we alert to these issues from our position in 'heavenly places' [Eph 2:6]? We are seated, as an Advocate, in the courtroom of heaven. We have a dominion over certain areas, usually related to the place we live.
  • The word 'advocate' means: A Good Voice, so we are called to be a voice for Good in our realm.
  • An Advocate is mandated to speak against the Accuser on behalf of those that are being wronged. For this reason you may have a deep soul burden for a particular segment of society [the elderly, the victims of a certain disease, sexual abused]. When you hear of certain injustices or abuse your soul becomes angered and therefore activated. The challenge then is to take the actions to alleviate the abuse.
  • The Advocate must make his case with convicted passion. Those who are captive to Satanic schemes of disease, injustice, or simply poverty are Victims without a Voice. It is the passion of a 'vexed soul' Psa 6:3 My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?
  • WE ARE VEXED FOR THE VICTIMS WITHOUT A VOICE!
  • Several Biblical scribes describe their emotional makeup as a product of their soul, none more than David in the Psalms. Also significant are the occurrences in Jeremiah and Job. All three were men who faced great personal trials and yet spoke with passion about the circumstances of their time.
  • Your soul can give you voice to the injustices of your place but keep your perspective from your position in Heavenly Places.

Worship in the High Places!

Living in the High Place: Worship in Difficult times
To worship is to “honor with extravagant love and extreme submission” [Webster's]. Many of us find it difficult to be extravagant when our world is 'extra-violent'. There is a clue to finding this High Worship by going to the 'High Places' as described in the last verse of the prophet Habbakuk.
[KJV] Hab 3:19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.
But translation of this verse has brought out different aspects:
[Jubilee] Hab 3:19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and upon my high places he will cause me to walk victorious in my instruments of music.
[Brenton] ab 3:19 The Lord God is my strength, and he will perfectly strengthen my feet; he mounts me upon high places, that I may conquer by his song.
The term that seems oddly out of place for a prophetic passage is “Chief Singer” which is more commonly used in the introduction to a Psalm. Hence other translations have made it a verbal phrase where the original phrase appears to belong at the beginning of a Psalm [eg. Psa 140:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.] Who is this Chief Singer or Musician? Can we find him in our modern worship?
Chief Singer [H5329] nâtsach - A primitive root; properly to glitter from afar, that is, to be eminent (as a superintendent, especially of the Temple services and its music); to be permanent: - excel, chief musician (singer), oversee (-r), set forward. 65 Occurrences
BDB Definition:
1) to excel, be bright, be preeminent, be perpetual, be overseer, be enduring
1a) (Niphal) enduring (participle)
1b) (Piel) to act as overseer or superintendent or director or chief
So if we are called to lead worship, we must have our goal as the high places where we commune with God. Not Performance but Passion. Those who understood this concept of worship will be those who Climb to the Heavenlies thru Worship.
So these nâtsach are called to be 'Shining Leaders with the Highest Goal'
>>How will you develop this trait in your own leadership? Let us look at first some examples of the nâtsach of the OT.
55 Psalms are addressed to the Chief Musician. They were composed for this 'Shining Leader'. That is more than 1/3 of the Psalms! And the nature of these psalms reflects a moment or a season in the life of the people. They had Purpose in the Psalmody, not just whenever they felt like Performing them but as they touched a specific need in the people.
When my spiritual mother, Fern Duthie, was going on to her place in the heavenly choir, the Lord comforted me with Psalm 91. In that moment I had all I needed and strength to continue the other challenges I was facing in my seminary studies. I felt as is Fern had now joined that heavenly choir and they 'sang this Psalm' into my heart... and the darkness of my grief was dispelled.
What Psalm will you need the Choir in the Highest place to sing into your spirit today? What Psalm has already brought you comfort in a dark time?
Psa_4:1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm of David. Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
Psa_8:1 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of David. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Or these Psalms from a Discouraged Soul...
Psa_12:1 To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
Psa_13:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?
These Psalms can heal a wounded soul and lift a broken spirit to its Heavenly Dwelling place...'like a bird to God's mountain' Ps 11:1
Now some of these are Declarations of God's Victory in the midst of Overwhelming situations. An excellent example is Psalm 18.
Psa 18:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said, I will love thee, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. 3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
This is a Psalm 'of' David and it is very specific about the event that inspired the psalm. If you asked David to describe his relationship with Saul, he would reply “It's complicated”. On one hand, Saul was David's king and he had brought him into his court, he was closer than a brother to the heir apparent Johnathan, yet God had singled him out from all his more successful brothers to be the next king, and indeed the True King of Israel with a Perpetual Throne and an Eternal Name. 2Sa 7:11-16 is the Covenant to David, fulfilled in Jesus [see Luke 1:31-33]. Indeed this is confirmed by the first Apostolic leader of the New Covenant: Peter.
[EBC commentary on 2 Sam 7] “In the Divine mind the prophecy reached forward to the time of Christ, and only in Christ was it fully verified. And it seems plain from some words of St. Peter on the day of Pentecost that David understood this. He knew that "God had sworn to him that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh. He would raise up Christ to sit on His throne" (Act_2:30).
Coming back to these Psalms, we must 'hear them with our spirit' as they Define our Destiny. How can they speak to our spirit and we sing them out in our worship? Can we see David' life through prophetic eyes?
Let us give some examples from the latter part of David's life, though faced with challenges in his life on earth, his mind was on the Eternal Destiny defined in that Covenant. Indeed he had established his throne and his heart was considering his legacy. Though David had been declared king by Samuel [see 1Sa 16:13] it would be over 11 years, and much difficult wandering before he was established in Jerusalem. One of his first acts as king was to establish worship in the Tabernacle which he had restored to Jerusalem.
After he had established the Worship of the Tabernacle several of these Psalms were assigned to the 'sons of Korah' one of three Chief Musicians. Some are called Maschil, that is, instruction as Psa 32:8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
Psa_42:1 To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah. As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
- Compares our yearning for God with a deer.
Psa_44:1 To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil. We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
- Instructs God's people from their history.
Psa_45:1 To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim, for the sons of Korah, Maschil, A Song of loves. My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer. >> the Teacher shares what he has learned... particularly of the Love of the Father.
Psa_46:1 To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
- Instructing God's People of His attribute of Protection.
Psa_47:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
- Ps 47 is not saying 'Clap your hands' to make religious noise but 'Clap your hands' to declare God's victory. We are instructed thru God's Divine Activity among the people... esp in times of conflict.
Psa_49:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
Ps 49 is not saying 'Hear this' so I can perform well but 'Hear this' so that you may instructed by the Holy Spirit.
Now we need to look at another term in many of these psalms: “Neginoth” [from Easton's Dictionary] songs with instrumental accompaniment, found in the titles of Psa_4:1-8; Psa_6:1-10; Psa_54:1-7; 55; Psa_67:1-7; Psa_76:1-12; rendered “stringed instruments,” Hab_3:19, A.V. It denotes all kinds of stringed instruments, as the “harp,” “psaltery,” “viol,” etc. The “chief musician on Neginoth” is the leader of that part of the temple choir which played on stringed instruments.
Such a variety of instructions and instruments reminds us of the many styles of worship we see today. And today we identify certain well known leaders with specific styles or eras [compare Andrae Crouch with Hillsong]. In the same way, there were distinct styles in the Psalmody.
Let us look at several Psalms ascribed specifically for one of three choirs that lead worship continuously in David's Tabernacle.
1) Asaph - A Levite, son of Berachiah; one of David's choir leaders (1Ch_6:39). An inspired seer, as well as a composer of music (2Ch_29:30; Neh_12:46). "The sons of Asaph" were poets and musical composers of the school founded by him; as Heman and Jeduthun also were heads of schools of sacred inspired music. 1Ch_25:1; 2Ch_20:14; Ezr_2:41; Psalm 50; 73-83, are all attributed to his authorship; but 83, celebrates the victory of Jehoshaphat long after Asaph's time, therefore "Asaph" in this psalm's title must mean "one of the school of Asaph."
Psa_75:1 To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.
-Asaph was also a 'Seer' Prophet. His name means 'gatherer of the people'.
Psa_76:1 To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. In Judah ['praise'] is God known: his name is great in Israel. - here Judah is an action not a place!
Psa_80:1 To the chief Musician upon Shoshannimeduth, A Psalm of Asaph. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, a) thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; b)thou that dwellest between the cherubims, shine forth.
- Asaph was 'called to call' the people of God so that they would gather at the Temple.
-In the 90's there was a movement called March for Jesus. One of the Anthemns that seemed to define these gatherings was “Shine Jesus Shine”
Psa_81:1 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm of Asaph. Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob. -Africans need NO encouragement in making 'a joyful noise'! I discovered this as I was part of a Baptism on the shores of Lake Kyagga, Uganda.
Now let us look at a second style of worship
    2) JEDUTHUN WAS A PRAISE LEADER! DECLARING THE INTERACTION OF GOD AND PEOPLE. He gave voice to the cries of the people.
Psa 39:1 (A psalm by David for Jeduthun, the music leader.) I told myself, "I'll be careful not to sin by what I say, and I'll muzzle my mouth when evil people are near."
2 I kept completely silent, but it did no good, and I hurt even worse. 3 I felt a fire burning inside, and the more I thought, the more it burned, until at last I said: 4 "Please, LORD, show me my future. Will I soon be gone?
Psa 62:1 (A psalm by David for Jeduthun, the music leader.) Only God can save me, and I calmly wait for him. 2 God alone is the mighty rock that keeps me safe and the fortress where I am secure.
Psa_77:1 To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph. I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
  • ''Praise' is defined as singing 'about' God. After Asaph had gathered the People, Jeduthun would declare to others about his communion with God.
  • Jeduthun -Lauder (to Laud is an old English word meaning praise, in Swahili we use the word 'asifiwe' inf. 'tumsifu'); the name means: “The Praiser!”,
  • a Levite of the family of Merari, and one of the three masters of music appointed by David (1Ch_16:41, 1Ch_16:42; 1Ch_25:1-6).
  • He is called in 2Ch_35:15 “the king's seer.”
  • His descendants are mentioned as singers and players on instruments (Neh_11:17).
  • He was probably the same as Ethan (1Ch_15:17, 1Ch_15:19). In the superscriptions to Psa_39:1-13, Psa_62:1-12, and 77, the words “upon Jeduthun” probably denote a musical instrument; or they may denote the style or tune invented or introduced by Jeduthun, or that the psalm was to be sung by his choir.
  • JEDITTHUN; ("who gives praises".) 1Ch_16:38; Psalm 39, 62, 77, titles, implying that these psalms were to be sung by Jeduthun's choir;
  • Neh_11:17. Jeduthun presided over a choir under David. "The sons of Jeduthun" had the office to "prophesy with the harp, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord" (1Ch_25:1; 1Ch_25:3).
  • He was a Merarite Levite, along with the Kohathite Heman and the Gershonite Asaph directed "praising the Lord with the instruments which I made, said David, to praise therewith" (1Ch_23:5-6).
  • These three clans also have specific roles in moving the Tabernacle and all its items across the wilderness.
  • Identical with Ethan the Merarite (1Ch_6:44; 1Ch_15:17; 1Ch_15:19); for as there was one Kohathite and one Gershonite, head of musicians, so there would be only one Merarite head.
Now let us move to the third worship leader.
3) HEMAN – Also a Seer but having a particular anointing to help the people experience the Shekinah.
Psa_88:1 A Song or Psalm for the sons of Korah, to the chief Musician upon Mahalath Leannoth, Maschil of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee:
Heman hē´man (הימן, hēmān, “faithful”): This style can be shown in these two psalms. They are directed to God, not just about God. This is the very definition of worship.
[Jubilee] Psa 88:1 (A song and a psalm by the people of Korah for the music leader. To the tune "Mahalath Leannoth." A special psalm by Heman the Ezrahite.) You keep me safe, LORD God. So when I pray at night, Psa 88:2 please listen carefully to each of my concerns. 3 I am deeply troubled and close to death; 4 I am as good as dead and completely helpless.
Psa 89:1 (A special psalm by Ethan the Ezrahite.) Our LORD, I will sing of your love forever. Everyone yet to be born will hear me praise your faithfulness. 2 I will tell them, "God's love can always be trusted, and his faithfulness lasts as long as the heavens." 3 You said, "David, my servant, is my chosen one, and this is the agreement I made with him: 4 David, one of your descendants will always be king."
Heman was musician and seer, a Levite, son of Joel and grandson of the prophet Samuel; of the family of the Kohathites (1Ch_6:33), appointed by David as one of the leaders of the temple-singing (1Ch_15:17; 2Ch_5:12). He had 14 sons (and 3 daughters) who assisted their father in the chorus. Heman seems also to have been a man of spiritual power; is called “the king's seer in matters of God” (1Ch_25:5; 2Ch_35:15).
1Ch_16:41 Heman and Jeduthun were their assistants, as well as the other men who had been chosen to praise the LORD for his never-ending love. 42 Heman and Jeduthun were also responsible for blowing the trumpets, and for playing the cymbals and other instruments during worship at the tent. The Levites in Jeduthun's clan were the guards at Gibeon.
1Ch_25:1 David and the temple officials chose the descendants of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to be in charge of music. They were to praise the LORD by playing cymbals, harps and other stringed instruments. Here is a list of the musicians and their duties:..4 Heman had fourteen sons [!!!]
1Ch_25:5 Heman was one of the king's prophets, and God honored Heman by giving him fourteen sons and three daughters.
1Ch_25:6 His sons were under his direction and played cymbals, harps, and other stringed instruments during times of worship at the temple. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman took their orders directly from the king.
They were the Worship Team!
2Ch_5:11 The priests of every group had gone through the ceremony to make themselves clean and acceptable to the LORD. The Levitical musicians, including Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, and their sons and relatives, were wearing robes of fine linen. They were standing on the east side of the altar, playing cymbals, small harps, and other stringed instruments. One hundred twenty priests were with these musicians, and they were blowing trumpets. They were praising the LORD by playing music and singing: "The LORD is good, and his love never ends." Suddenly a cloud filled the temple as the priests were leaving the holy place.
Oh that we would have such 'exclamations of worship'. Worship that is Ordered for the Presence of God!! Statements that need an exclamation mark!!
Psa_84:1 To the chief Musician upon Gittith, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. How amiable are thy tabernacles, O LORD of hosts!
Psa_85:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah. LORD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. - tabernacles (nb plural) for
God 'dwells' anywhere not just the church. To quote my mentor in Worship, a modern day Asaph, as he looked up at a beautiful starry sky; 'I wish I could capture what I see with my eyes, and what is overflowing in my heart' [May 31st 2011, his first trip to East Africa]. This is the yearning of the SEER!!
Finally, a verse that my mentor David Hinds, revealed to me my purpose for this season, and many seasons to come.
Amo 9:11 In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen and close up its breaches; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
Note that in the Revival under Hezekiah, this king 'in the line of King David' restored the three choirs with descendants of the SAME Chief Musicians!
2Ch 29:12 When Hezekiah finished talking, the following Levite leaders went to work: Mahath son of Amasai and Joel son of Azariah from the Kohath clan; Kish son of Abdi and Azariah son of Jehallelel from the Merari clan; Joah son of Zimmah and Eden son of Joah from the Gershon clan; Shimri and Jeuel from the Elizaphan clan; Zechariah and Mattaniah from the Asaph clan; Jehuel and Shimei from the Heman clan; Shemaiah and Uzziel from the Jeduthun clan.

God is restoring not just worship but a pattern that releases a covenant anointing on those who seek him.... BUT that is a teaching for another day.
